Dry skin is a common condition that can leave the skin feeling itchy and irritated. Where dry skin is a common problem, it can be difficult to treat, cause premature aging, and even lead to some medical conditions. For those who suffer from dry skin and want to understand why it occurs and how you can prevent it, The Skin and Body Refinery will explain.

What Does Dry Skin Look Like on Face?

Dry skin appears rough and even scaly. When skin dehydrates it can lead to peeling and become itchy and even painful. Severe cases of dry skin can look red and swollen. At times the skin will split and crack easily, causing deep fissures in the skin which will bleed. Dry skin can affect the entire body or only in certain areas.

Layers of Epidermis

Human skin consists of three major layers, the deepest being the Hypodermis which houses all of the nerves, vessels and dermis. The second layer houses blood vessels, the oil, sweat glands, and hair follicles. The surface or outer layer is mostly made of cells tightly woven together. The skin’s soft pliable surface is credited to the water content in the body. Skin absorbs water from the air and through drinking.

What Causes Dry Skin?

Dry climates often lead to dry skin or dehydration. However, other factors can cause dry skin such as harsh soaps, itchy clothing, or long hot showers or baths. Climates with extreme hot or cold temperatures with low humidity can also cause dry skin. Some of these condition can be manmade such as being simply a part of a person’s job. Another culprit may be medication. Medication can interact with people differently and some can dehydrate the body or skin. Many skin lotions also dry out the skin. Yes, that’s right. Lotion that contains high levels of alcohol actually dries the skin out faster, and only provide short lived relief.

How to Relieve Dry Skin

For those who suffer from dry skin and are looking for treatments, start by taking short showers or baths. Long showers can wash away the body’s natural oil which keeps the skin hydrated. Additionally, avoid hot or cold showers. Instead, use warm water. After bathing, make sure you apply moisturizers. When shopping for moisturizers look for non-alcohol-based moisturizers. Also use a mild soap skin cleanser. Avoid harsh soaps that can remove too much of your body’s natural oil that keeps it hydrated. If you live in a dry climate or your home has is very dry, use a humidifier to add moisture to the air which provides your skin the chance to absorb the moisture. Also make sure to drink plenty of water. People who suffer from dry skin are also suffering from minor dehydration and it is a sign that you should drink more water. If these tips and tricks aren’t helping you hydrate your skin, then seek professional advice.
