When it comes to treating your skin with a product regimen, there are a host of ingredients commonly found in these products that benefit your skin. Alpha-hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, hydroquinone, retinol, kojic acid, copper peptide and so on are such ingredients. They help the skin combat age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and other skin problems or damage. Today we at The Skin and Body Refinery would like to touch on these ingredients.
Skin Care Ingredients that Really Work
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs): Products containing alpha-hydroxy acids, like glycolic, tartaric, lactic, and citric acids, are increasingly popular in recent years. Fine lines, age spots, irregular pigmentation, and potentially shrink pores are treated with this ingredient. This however can cause minor skin irritation and cause sun sensitivity; sun screen is recommended.
Beta-Hydroxy Acid (salicylic acid): Dead skin cells are removed with Salicylic acid improving the texture and color of sun-damaged skin. Additionally, acne is helped with the oil-laden hair follicle openings letting penetration.
Hydroquinone: These lightening agents or bleaching creams are used to lighten hyperpigmentation like age spots and dark spots produced by pregnancy or hormone therapy. Products containing kojic acid instead might be more beneficial for those allergic to hydroquinone.
Kojic Acid: Pigment problems and age spots can be treated with Kojic Acid. It slows the production of melanin acting as a lightening agent.
Retinol: Many over-the-counter “anti-aging” skin care products have retinol which is derived of Vitamin A. Collagen and elastin is found when vitamin A has a molecular structure that’s tiny enough to get into the lower layers of skin. Mottled pigmentation, skin texture, skin tone and color, fine lines and wrinkles, and your skin’s hydration levels are also improved with retinol.
L-Ascorbic Acid: This is the only form of vitamin C found in skin care products and is a useful form of it. The only antioxidant proven to stimulate the synthesis of collagen to reduce scars and minimize the fine lines and wrinkles is helped with vitamin C.
Copper Peptide: Referenced as the most effective skin regeneration product, copper peptide is proven to promotes collagen and elastin production, in addition to the glycosaminoglycans as well as acts as an antioxidant. Additionally, copper peptide benefits of the body’s natural tissue-building processes, which firm, smooth, and soften skin, and do it in less time than other products.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid: A newer, ultra-potent antioxidant that helps fight future skin damage and helps repair past damage is “the miracle in a jar”, or alpha-lipoic acid. It’s soluble in both water and oil, which permits its entrance to all parts of the cell. Because of the quality, alpha-lipoic acid is believed to provide the greatest protection against damaging free radicals. Skin has a healthy glow, diminishes the fine lines, and boost levels of other antioxidants, such as vitamin C.
DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol): You can thank DMAE if you have heard of fish referred to as brain food. DMAE is present in anchovies, salmon, and sardines and it enhances production of acetylcholine, which is important for proper mental functions. In skin care products DMAE shows remarkable effects when applied topically to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
