Carboxytherapy originated at the Royal Spas of France in 1932 with the treatment of patients afflicted by peripheral and arterial occlusive disease. Today, it’s used to treat stretchmarks, cellulite, and hypertrophic scars with impressive results. Carboxytherapy can improve elasticity, encourage collagen repair, improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and can destroy localized fatty deposits.

What is Carboxytherapy?

Carbon dioxide is an invisible, odorless gas that’s part of the air we breathe. It’s in our bodies all the time- we breathe in oxygen, and exhale carbon dioxide. As we age, capillaries start to become dormant which leads to a reduction in blood circulation. This deprives cells of oxygen that will stop the cells’ ability to regenerate. Micro injections of carbon dioxide are injected just beneath the surface of the skin. This stimulates circulation and collagen production that will improve the appearance of the skin. When carbon dioxide is injected your body thinks there’s an oxygen deficiency and it will respond by increasing blood flow. This creates a surge of oxygen and nutrients to the treated area and the result is cell restoration. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and there is no downtime. You will be back to work and daily activities right away. The injections feel like a strong sting. With any med spa service there are possible side effects. The good news is that they are very mild with carboxytherapy. The first potential side effect might be pain at the injection site, just like any other of injection. Second, there may be bruising of the tissue of the skin. As with any skin treatment you should expect some mild bruising that will only last for a short time. Third, some people may experience a crackling sensation on their skin that is only temporary and will only last a short time.

Carboxytherapy Treatments

Stretchmarks are wide linear bands of discolored or wrinkled skin. They occur in areas of collagen damage due to stretching. Carboxytherapy is the only treatment available for both old and new stretch marks that can visibly repair broken collagen and is safe to use on all skin types. Carboxytherapy will increase collagen production to thicken the skin and improve the appearance of stretch marks.
Cellulite is the lumpy fat bulges that appears on the thighs and buttocks. Women are more predisposed to cellulite and it’s rare for men to suffer from it. Reason being that females have thinner skin and more fat layers. Small bulges occur when fat cells are pushed through damaged areas of skin and creates the “dimpled” appearance that is known as cellulite. Carboxytherapy can rupture fat cells while leaving the remaining skin structure intact. It also thickens and smooths the overlying skin.
Hypertrophic scars are characterized by deposits of excessive amounts of collagen which can create a raised scar. Carboxytherapy treatments can be used to minimize the appearance of these scars.
