Used to reduce excess fat from beneath the chin, Kybella is an effective, nonsurgical injection technique. It is an alternative to surgical procedures like liposuction. Significant improvement and satisfaction with their appearance was had by about 82% of the patience in clinical trials where these same trials concluded the injections to be safe. We at Skin and Body Refinery would like to take the opportunity to talk about the basics of Kybella injections.

How Kybella Works

Used to target the fat beneath the chin, Kybella is a nonsurgical injectable technique. In order to target the fat cells in this area, the process uses a series of deoxycholic acid injections. The downtime is minimal in most cases and incisions are not required. Candidates should be over the age of 18 and have moderate to severe fat under the chin. If you have had or are planning to have facial surgery, experiencing trouble swallowing, if you pregnant or nursing, or experiencing an infection or has a medical condition near the injection site are not candidates. There is little preparation required for Kybella, as it is a nonsurgical procedure. Be sure to schedule the procedure before any major events. Reducing skin infection by properly washing your face before the procedure is essential, and to prevent post-treatment bruising, avoid ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Naturally produced by your body to help absorb fat is a bile acid known as deoxycholic acid. A Synthetic form of this as an injection is found in Kybella injections. To stop storing the fat, the acid destroys fat cells beneath the chin area once it is injected. Since deoxycholic acid can kill other cells in the process as well so it is important a healthcare professional administers your Kybella injections.

Kybella Procedure

Generally, before the procedure, the medical practitioner marks the injection sites with a marker. Some may administer a topical numbing agent or ice pack to ease any pain or discomfort. Metabolizing by the body over the following weeks, the average needs 20-30 injections and may take up to 50 injections used under the chin as the acid works gradually to kill fat cells. The number of the treatments vary to the individual. To reach optimal results, it can take multiple treatments. With at least one month between each session, you can receive up to six Kybella treatments.

How to Lessen Swelling from Kybella

Typically, pain, swelling, bruising, redness, and numbness can be experienced as a side effect from this nonsurgical Kybella treatments. In most cases, the recovery is minimal, and the downtown can vary. Within one to two weeks, the minor effects subside. More severe side effects can include uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, nerve injury in the jaw, and/or trouble swallowing. Any discomfort should be discussed with your professional and if any of the serious side effects occur, call your healthcare provider.
