Skin and Body Refinery offers Mesotherapy for our valued clients. Today, we would like to shine the light on mesotherapy and share some of the basics for those interested in this method to enhance your body’s image.

History of Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is a French-imported medical technique. It was first developed in France by Dr. Michel Pistor in 1952. The treatment involves the injection of small amounts of various medications into the mesoderm, the layer of fat and connective tissue under the skin, and was originally designed for treatment of sports injuries, vascular and infectious diseases, and the improvement of circulation. The underlying fat is melted when these small amounts of medication are injected into the mesoderm. Since its development, over 15,000 doctors in France and South America have been using the technique and now the U.S. is taking advantage of mesotherapy.

Mesotherapy for Belly Fat & Weight Loss

According to some experts, Mesotherapy is effective in up to 95% of patients and with amazing results. Patients are often delighted with the quick fix for cellulite, spot weight reduction, or overall weight loss. Depending on the treatment cellulite vs. fat, dictates the compounds injected. However, a combination of medications like aminophylline and Novocain in addition to plant extracts and vitamins are generally used. From obese people who need treatment on the abdomen, trunk, buttocks, arms, and legs to those who are frustrated in dealing with stubborn fatty areas such as saddlebags or love handles, mesotherapy can treat nearly anyone. Once the fat melts, it is naturally excreted. Mesotherapy is permanent and patients don’t gain the weight back. Where some people can see results after the first treatment, most generally need four to see the dress size reduction or belt notches being lost. Experts recommend 5 to 10 sessions. The number of injections at each session varies, from 50 to 150 for the weight loss and/or cellulite reduction. Patients generally report feeling no more sensation than an ant bite as the administration is commonly given with a chemical injector or “meso-gun” using a very tiny needle. Those pregnant or undergoing treatment for cancer, diabetes, who are on blood thinners, have blood clots or heart arrhythmia, or other significant major medical problems are not ideal candidates.

Mesotherapy for Hair Loss & More

Where many medical spas and doctor offices use mesotherapy solely for weight loss and cellulite, there are other effective outcomes for various conditions. Mesotherapy has long been used in Europe and South America to treat fibromyalgia, ankle sprains, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, hair loss to herpes, as well as Bell’s palsy, among others. Throughout U.S. mesotherapy can soon be used for other needs in addition to cosmetic purposes such as hair loss and sports-related injuries. However, due to its weight-loss benefits, mesotherapy is getting a lot of attention. It is proving to be more effective because the same medications that you would take orally are being directly injected and often need only 10% to 20% of the normal oral dose.
