One of the long standing trends in skin rejuvenation is microneedling with PRP. It became popular through celebrities in recent years and the cosmetic procedure involves drawing blood from your arm, separating platelets and injecting them into your face. There are quite a few benefits to having microneedling and we at Skin & Body Refinery would like to further elaborate on this treatment.

How Does Microneedling Work for Wrinkles, Acne & Other Skin Benefits?

Microneedling is done as the professional safely uses precision to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. The PRP or platelet rich plasma, gets injected into the skin and it triggers new collagen and elastin production. While it is doing this the existing scar tissue is broken up, revealing smoother, brighter, tighter and more youthful skin. To promote collagen production, microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that involves puncturing the skin with fine needles to promote collagen production. All areas of the face, neck, décolletage and hands can be treated with microneedling.

Microneedling Results

Improving skin texture and stimulating collagen formation are the primary goals with microneedling. After the age of 25, we stop producing our natural collagen. Thanks to microneedling, the scar tissue bands from acne or surgical scars are broken up, stimulating a deeper healing. With the help of microneedling combined with PRP injections, the skin’s texture is improved, and unwanted wrinkles are reduced. Between the 2 separate treatments, healing time differs. Traditional microneedling can take 5-7 days for the redness to recover but PRP decreases downtime to 24 hours. As micro-injuries to the skin are inflicted, they are essentially being healed with the platelet-rich plasma. The skin’s natural healing process is boosted as the PRP stimulates greater collagen formation to produce rich growth factors and healing properties. You can get better results with fewer treatments with the PRP than microneedling alone. This treatment is ideal for all skin types, however, people who have difficulties getting their blood drawn should look into alternative methods. For those looking to improve the overall appearance of his or her skin and to achieve a deeper collagen formation are perfect candidates.

Microneedling Procedure

Generally, photographs are taken to ensure there’s accurate documentation of results and progress, prior to microneedling. With a a topical cream applied on the skin, the patient is numbed for 30–45 minutes. Once numbed about 11mL of blood is extracted and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the PRP from the red blood cells. After the skin is prepped, the microneedling procedure begins. For roughly an hour and a half, the patient undergoes the entire procedure. Until the next morning, you do not wash the PRP off your face., this gives it the opportunity to heal the skin. After the first few days, a healthy glow is noticed. Full collagen remodeling results take about 4-6 weeks. Following the procedure, the PRP is rinsed after 12–24 hours. It is advised that a gentle cleanser be used and to follow up to protect your skin with a broad-spectrum SPF moisturizer. To maintain skin hydration during the following two to five days after treatment, it is recommended that you use a hyaluronic serum. Usually after about a week, people can resume their routine skin care.
