Quite a few people have a skin care regimen both in and out of the shower. Though most are good about cleansing and moisturizing, few ensure that their skin maintains a healthy and smooth appearance. Where there are many people who take the time to exfoliate their face, not so many do their whole body. However, the combination of cleansing, exfoliation, and massage provides more benefits that go beyond what a bar of soap can do. Today, we at Skin and Body Refinery would like to take the opportunity to relate benefits and additional information about body scrubs.

Benefits of a Body Scrub

The cells on your skin’s body regularly shed to reveal the new and healthier skin beneath the surface. As we get older, the turnover process slows down. Body scrubs will help give the natural process a boost. Scrubs work in a number of ways. Massaging the scrub over the whole body will allow the dead skin to be scrubbed off the surface, the massaging action enhances blood circulation and helps drain your lymph nodes as the increase of blood flow is pushed to the surface. After the deep exfoliating cleanse, removing the residue and moisturizing the skin will leave it smooth and well-hydrated. Another additional benefit during and after the process is the feeling of euphoria. Your mood will positively shift, and you can relax as the skin is being rejuvenated.

Body VS Face Scrubs

In comparison to facial exfoliating particles, body scrub particles are larger exfoliates that aren’t as delicate. Common ingredients include sugar, salt and crushed nut shells. Chemical exfoliate ingredients include alpha hydroxy and glycolic acids (that firm and smooth the skin) and salicylic acid (that improves redness and blemishes).

Homemade Body Scrub

When it comes to body exfoliating, nothing compares to the quality products pf professionals. However, in between appointments, you can have a homemade body scrub to help maintain healthier skin.
Ingredients:
½ cup white or brown sugar
½ cup ground oatmeal or coffee grounds for an energized scrub
¼ cup olive oil
1-3 drops essential oil (almond, citrus, lavender, or peppermint are particularly beneficial)
Combine all the ingredients and whisk together. Once blended together, pour the concoction into a mason jar or another seal-able container. This mixture can be stored for up to three weeks in a dry place and all you need is a quarter-sized amount for each scrubbing.

When Should You Avoid a Body Scrub?

Avoid using body scrubs if you are experiencing any kind of skin conditions, such as a rash, sunburn, or other types. The procedure, and even some of the ingredients, can irritate your skin further. Additionally, if you scrub contains chemical ingredients, avoid shaving for 24 hours.
